Peace delegation from Vietnam tours Laos
A delegation of the Vietnam Peace Committee (VPC) headed by its Vice-President Phạm Văn Chương toured different parts of Laos from July 21st to 25th at the invitation of the Lao Peace and Solidarity Committee (LPSC).
The five-member delegation had a working session, followed by a dinner party, with Khamphane Simmalavong, President, and other senior LPSC office-bearers. They informed each other of the situation in their respective countries, exchanged views on regional and international issues, and discussed measures to enhance cooperation between the two organizations, especially at regional and inter-regional people’s forums.
Khamphane Simmalovong told his guests that the LPSC was following closely and profoundly concerned over the situation in the South China Sea. The LPSC stood for a peaceful solution of the dispute, refrainment from the use or threat of force, and respect of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, he said. Proper implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea would help ensure peace, security, stability and cooperation in the region, he added.
An audience was given the Vietnamese delegation at the Headquarters of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party in Vientiane by Bounponc Bouttanavong, Politburo member, Secretary, and Chair of the Office of the Party’s Central Committee. Bounpone Bouttanavong spoke highly of the friendly and cooperative relations between the two peace organizations which, he said, were active contributions to the friendship and cooperation between the people of the two countries.
Referring to recent developments in the South China Sea. Bounpone Bouttanavong noted that Vietnam had shown its goodwill for a solution; he expressed the wish for self-restraint by both Vietnam and China to the benefit of stability in the South China Sea.
In the northeastern province of Xieng Khouang, the Vietnamese spent much time at the Plain of Jars, famous for its giant mysterious centuries-old stone containers. They were also guests of honor at a dinner reception offered by
Somkot Mangnomek, Party Secretary and Governor of the province./.
