Hanoi workshop discusses ASEAN Community opportunities, challenges
Themed “ASEAN Community – Opportunities and Challenges, Solidarity and Cooperation”, an international workshop was held in Hanoi on 19-20 October, with representatives of all ASEAN member countries among the participants.
The workshop was co-organized by the Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation (VPDF) and the Southeast Asia Office of the German Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS).
In his opening remarks on behalf of VPDF President Nguyễn Thị Bình, VPDF Vice-President Trịnh Ngọc Thái expressed the wish that the Workshop would enlighten government agencies, businesses and the people of ASEAN member countries on opportunities and challenges expected from the forthcoming establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community. The Community, he said, would require Vietnam and other ASEAN countries to do their utmost for narrowing down the development gaps among them and to cooperate closely with each other for raising the competitiveness of the Community as a whole.
Presentations at the four sessions of the two-day workshop included:
1. Session One: Economic Community in the context of globalization.
- Overview of the ASEAN Economic Community, by Anna Mae, ASEAN Secretariat;
- International economic integration (issues of AEC), by Nguyễn Quang Thái, Vietnam Economics Association;
- The European Community – Opportunities, challenges and lessons learnt from the participation of non-governmental organizations, by Carsten Schatz, Chairman of the Left, Treptow-Köpernick, Berlin, Germany.
2. Session Two: Agricultural and rural development in ASEAN integration.
- Agricultural development in ASEAN integration – impacts and solutions, by Võ Tòng Xuân, South Cần Thơ University, Vietnam;
- Experience in government-scientists-businesses-farmers cooperation in sustainable agricultural development; multi-dimensional poverty reduction in integration and development, by Đào Đức Liêm, Center for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD), Vietnam;
- Food & Agriculture in Thailand: Challenges in the Era of AEC, by Kingkorn Narintarakul, Biothai Foundation, Thailand.
3. Session Three: Trade, investment and businesses in AEC:
- ASEAN Economic Community – Implications for trade and investment in Vietnam, by Nguyễn Anh Dương, Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), Vietnam;
- Indonesian enterprises and Synergistic of Entrepreneurship Program for Youth in ASEAN, by Fakhrurrazi, Business Incubator Economic Faculty, Tanjungpura Pontianak, Indonesia;
- Vietnamese businesses in preparation for ASEAN Community integration, by Đoàn Duy Khương, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).
4. Session 4: Human resources in ASEAN integration:
- Development of the labor market and high-quality human resources in the context of ASEAN integration, by Nguyễn Thị Lan Hương, Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), Vietnam;
- Advancing transformative social protection amidst deepening inequalities in Asia, by Tina Ebro, Regional |Cooperation and Social Protection Network, the Philippines;
- Malaysia’s legislation on Technologists and Technicians, by Ong Ching Loon, Institution of Engineers, Malaysia./.
