VPDF representative attends Asean Caucus

VPDF Vice-President Trần Đắc Lợi headed Vietnam’s 5-person delegation attending the ASEAN People’s Caucus on the EU-ASEAN FTA held in Manila, the Philippines on June 23-25, 2008. Under the theme “EU-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement: Confronting Regional Trade and Integration Issues”, the regional event aimed to take a closer and critical look at the EU-ASEAN FTA and its impacts on regional trade and integration and to build public awareness on these issues, particularly among the affected communities and sectors in ASEAN.

The Vietnamese delegation took part in all activities in the program, They and other participants from civil society movements and organizations presented their studies on the implications of EU-ASEAN FTA on their countries’ economies and societies. They also discussed EU’s new free trade strategy in Asia. Some of them expressed their strong concerns about the proposed EU-ASEAN FTA, slated to be concluded within the next two years, and saw it as only favoring the EU. In addition, participants also discussed cross-border issues and concerns such as food and agriculture, environment and energy, services, invesments and finance, aid for trade, labour and migration, farmers, fishers, women and urban poor. The Caucus agreed that to redresss the imbalance in the economic relations between EU and ASEAN, the EU-ASEAN FTA must take into account the development objectives of ASEAN countries, and that to ensure social justice the people’s needs and rights should be placed at the heart of any economic development./.
