South-South People’s Solidarity Meetings

The booklet records the proceedings of a VPDF-hosted event called “South-South People’s Solidarity Meetings” held in Hanoi on September 21-24, 2007 and attended by invited guests and representatives of social movements and people’s organizations from 23 Asian, African and Latin American countries.
The event consisted in fact of a South–South Solidarity Co-ordination Meeting, a Conference on Promotion of People’s Alternatives, and a Workshop on “Agriculture under WTO”, plus a panel presentation reserved exclusively for Vietnam.
The booklet covers documents adopted at the Meetings, speeches and presentations made by participants.
They include the Welcoming Remarks by VPDF President Mme Nguyễn Thị Bình (full text), the Final Declaration (full text), a List of issues for alternative research, and a Summary Report on the event.
The presentations are:
- “Democracy, People’s Power and Social Movements: Learnings from Nepal” by Gorkan Bhatt (Conscious Media Forum, Nepal);
- “Global Hegemony, IMF and Bangladesh” by Anu Muhammad (Jahangimagar University, Bangladesh);

- “WTO and Agriculture in Nigeria” by Kenneth Okoineme Abumera (ActionAid International, Nigeria);
- “Comments on Agriculture and the World Trade Organization” by Dung Bam Sha (University of Jos, Nigeria);
- “Agriculture and the Global South” by Nguyễn Văn Thanh (Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation, Vietnam);
- “South-South Solidarity as the Expression of AAPSO” by E.A. Vidyasekera (Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Organization, Sri Lanka);
- “Africa-Asia Solidarity” by Junya Yimprasert (Thai Labor Campaign, Thailand);
- “People’s and Human Rights: SAARC and Regional Mechanisms” by Mjukul Sharma (Amnesty International, India);
- “Imagine a New South Asia (INSA): A People-Centered Development and Cooperation Process” by Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad (Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad, Banglades);
- “Vietnam on the Road of Renewal toward Socialism” by Trần Đắc Lợi (Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, Vietnam)./.
