Hanoi workshop prepares for bi-regional people’s forum
Researchers and civil society workers from many Asian and European countries attended a workshop in Hanoi on 12-13 May in preparation for the 11th Asia-Europe People’s Forum (AEPF-2016) slated for early July in Ulan Bataar, Mongolia.
Themed “Peace and Security in Asia and Europe”, the workshop was co-sponsored by the Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation (VPDF), the German Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) and ActionAid Vietnam.
Topics of discussion included: peace and security issues at AEPF-2014 in Milan, Italy; international geo-strategic situation; peace and security in Asia; situation in Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and South and West Asia; refugees, terrorism, nuclear weapons, arms trade and military spending; and programs for AEPF-2016.
Opening remarks were made by Vũ Xuân Hồng, President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO); and Liliane Danso-Dahmen, Head of the RLS Southeast Asia Office.

- Jay Jay Denis (Malaysia), Monitoring Sustainability of Globalization (MSN), Situation in Southeast Asia;
- Marc Batac (Philippines), Initiatives for International Dialogue, Situation in Southeast Asia;
- Trịnh Ngọc Thái (Vietnam), Vietnam Peace and Development Foundation (VPDF), South China Sea tension threatens regional peace and security;
- Farroukh Sohail Goindi (Pakistan), Awami Workers’ Party, Situation in South and West Asia;

The participants also discussed proposals for the concept and programs of workshops and other activities related to peace and security at AEPF-2016, presented by Cora Fabros, Stop the War Coalition of the Philippines./.
