VPDF to promote research projects

The Board of VPDF’s Council, meeting on November 6, decided to promote in the coming months several research projects, one of which related specifically to the world financial crisis and its impacts on Vietnam..
Others concern EU-ASEAN Free Trade Agreements and utilization of a market economy for social development purposes.

Taking stock of VPDF’s performance over the past months, the meeting paid particular attention to the following three events:

- The 7th Asia-Europe People’s Forum, held in Beijing on October 12-16. The 18-member Vietnamese delegation, headed by Mr. Trần Đắc Lợi, Vice-President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations and of VPDF, included representatives of VPDF, the Fatherland Front, Peace Committee, Union of Science and Technology Associations, General Confederation of Labor, Farmers’ Association, Youth Union, Association for Seafood Export and Processing, Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin, Association for People with Disabilities, and the newspaper “Vietnamese Women”. They joined discussions in various roundtables and workshops, and played an active role in the workshop on weapons of mass destruction, where the case of Vietnamese victims of the toxic chemical Agent Orange used by US forces during the war enjoyed warm support.
- The International Meeting of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity, held in Caracas on October 13-16. VPDF Vice-President Trịnh Ngọc Thái and Prof. Đào Thế Tuấn, President of the Vietnam Association for Rural Development, took part in various discussions, especially on issues related to democracy and agriculture, rural development and the peasantry. They also visited two co-operatives around Caracas.
- The US tour by an Agent Orange victims’ delegation from September 9 to November 2. The delegation included 72-year old first generation victim Ms. Đặng Hồng Nhựt (herself affected by AO) and 22-year old second generation victim Ms. Trần Thị Hoan (whose mother had been exposed to AO). They were accompanied by VPDF Board member Ms. Đinh Thị Minh Huyền. Their tour, covering 10 cities and 8 states, was co-hosted by the US Vietnam AO Relief and Responsibility Campaign and Vietnam War Veterans. Some 80 meetings, talks and interviews took place involving members of Congress, lawyers, community workers, and war veterans many of whom were AO victims themselves./
